New Zealand's peer-to-peer car platforms have gone, so Turo starts with no hosts

YourDrive closed in 2020 and MyCarYourRental's site no longer loads, while Getaround ran the same marketplace as Turo and lost more than its revenue. Camplify runs the model here for campervans and is growing, which makes it the closest working example.

Finding 1 of 5

Both peer-to-peer car platforms that tried New Zealand are gone, and Getaround shows that owning no cars doesn't protect a marketplace

YourDrive, half-owned by Jucy, signed up more than 25,000 owners and renters before it stopped trading in March 2020, when the border closure removed its tourist bookings. MyCarYourRental, founded in 2015, advertised over 300 cars in 2025 and its site no longer loads. Mevo, which owned its fleet, went into administration in March 2026 and was relaunched by Carbn with 12 cars. Getaround ran Turo's model and lost US$113.9m on US$72.7m of revenue in 2023.

For Turo

A Turo launch would be the third attempt at peer-to-peer car hire here, and YourDrive's dependence on overseas tourists, which vanished when the border closed, is the closest local warning.

Finding 2 of 5

Camplify already runs peer-to-peer hire in New Zealand for campervans, and no peer-to-peer car platform is still online

Camplify lists more than 2,000 Kiwi-owned RVs and, since the Commerce Commission cleared its 2022 purchase of Mighway and SHAREaCAMPER from THL, owns every peer-to-peer RV platform in the country. New Zealand was its only market to grow on all four measures in FY25. It lists no cars, and both local attempts at cars have closed.

For Turo

Camplify's trips run six to ten nights and six in ten are booked from overseas, which makes it the closest live picture of how New Zealand owners and travellers use a peer-to-peer marketplace.

Finding 3 of 5

Toyota Financial Services and Carbn Group own most of New Zealand's car sharing, and Toyota's finance arm also owns the top-rated rental brand

Toyota Financial Services owns Cityhop through KINTO New Zealand and bought Ezi Car Rental in October 2023; Ezi leads Canstar Blue's 2026 satisfaction ranking, and GO Rentals, a four-time winner, is now fourth. Carbn Group owns Zilch and bought Mevo's assets in May 2026. Trade press says Carbn is becoming part of Custom Fleet, which the Companies Office register doesn't yet show.

For Turo

Toyota's finance arm owns a car-share brand and the best-rated rental brand, so a newcomer would be measured against a group that already covers short city trips and longer hires.

Finding 4 of 5

Renting out a car in New Zealand needs a rental-service licence and a Certificate of Fitness, and who carries that on a peer-to-peer platform is unresolved

Hiring out a car for reward is a "rental service" under the Land Transport Act 1998, which needs a Transport Service Licence, and rental vehicles need a Certificate of Fitness in place of a Warrant of Fitness. Camplify's own owner promotion asks drivable vans for a rental Certificate of Fitness. The only known peer-to-peer car insurance here was built bespoke for MyCarYourRental, and ACC covers injury but not damage to the car.

For Turo

Whether NZTA treats Turo or each host as the operator is the first thing an entry has to settle, and this research couldn't confirm it from a primary source.

No sports sponsorship turned up for any of the five competitors operating in New Zealand, and Turo has sponsored sport before

Every brand-building tie this research found runs through a motoring body, an energy company, a parent, an insurer or awards. Turo became an official partner of Canada Basketball in March 2024. When Turo announced Australia in October 2022 it had nothing to share about New Zealand.

Where Turo stands

Turo would arrive with a model that works at scale elsewhere and none of the local supply, licences or relationships it needs

+Strengths

+

Far larger than any marketplace here, with about US$936 million of revenue in the year to September 2024, more than ten times Getaround's.

+

No fleet financing of the kind that broke Mevo.

+

A wider range of vehicles and longer trips than any car-share fleet here.

+

Turo already runs in Australia, next door.

โˆ’Gaps

โˆ’

No hosts yet, in a country where the last two peer-to-peer car platforms closed.

โˆ’

Licensing and a Certificate of Fitness on every rented car.

โˆ’

Insurance would have to be built, because the only local peer-to-peer policy was bespoke and ACC doesn't cover the car.

โˆ’

Council parking deals would start from nothing; Mevo waited about eight months for Wellington City Council to re-approve its car parks before relaunching.

โ—‹Open ground

โ—‹

Multi-day and out-of-town trips, which no car-share fleet is built for.

โ—‹

Sport sponsorship, which none of the five New Zealand competitors has claimed.

โ—‹

1.56 million Australian visitors a year, from the one nearby market where Turo already operates.

Sport

Event sport tied to travel puts the brand in front of people who need a car for a few days

Rugby, national or regional

What it buys

National reach, through the country's most heavily sponsored property.

What it costs

A seat among sponsors of a property that earned NZ Rugby NZ$142.2m in sponsorship and licensing in FY2025.

Who it reaches

A broad national audience, most of whom aren't about to travel.

Rugby buys the widest reach at the highest price, and most of that audience isn't about to hire a car.

Event sport tied to travel

Sharper first move
What it buys

A place beside Queenstown's ski fields, Coronet Peak and The Remarkables, and the Queenstown Marathon each November.

What it costs

Not priced in this research; event packages are usually sold at a much smaller scale than national rugby.

Who it reaches

People who fly or drive in and need a car for a few days once they arrive.

Event sport costs less and reaches the person who books the car.

Going broader

Evidence

106 of the 107 facts carry a source checked on 3 October, and the other 49 claims are judgements or searches that came back empty

A fact needs a source. A judgement (a comparison, a risk, an opportunity) can't have one, so it stays labelled inferred however well it's argued. Counted from the label on every claim in the six profiles.

On 22 Sep, 65 of 125 claims were labelled observed. The re-check sourced lines that had been inferred, split compound claims and added the Camplify profile, which took sourced facts to 106.

Labels bar: Observed / Inferred. Re-check bar: solid dark = confirmed, solid grey = corrected or stale, hatched = could not confirm. Mevo's checker merged claims, so its segments cover 28 of 32. Mevo: one judgement rested on a wrong premise, and two more were softened. Every negative held except one: Turo has used sport. Claims that couldn't be confirmed were reworded, removed or relabelled inferred, which leaves one unconfirmed fact in the profiles (Zilch's NZ$99 a week).

Five profiles were re-checked against the pages they cite on 3 Oct 2026, including the inferred lines; Camplify was sourced with verbatim quotes the same day. Claims whose sources couldn't be reached or didn't support them were corrected or downgraded to inferred. See analysis/verification-note.md.

How this was built

The research is a set of files a script can refresh, so the next pass only reports what changed

Everything on the Analysis tab comes from markdown profiles that carry a label on each claim. The 3 October re-check overturned the first version's lead finding, that owning no fleet was itself protection, once Getaround's numbers were checked against its SEC filings.

The process

Six steps produced this repo, and the re-check is the one that decides how far to trust it

  1. 01/setupFrame the company and the field

Turo's positioning drafted from public sources; 5 competitors and a comparison template approved.

  2. 02/scan-competitorsSurvey every competitor

5 profiles written at survey depth, covering the snapshot and the sections this lens needs.

  3. 03/competitive-updateTake three deep

Mevo, Cityhop and Zilch researched in full, together, because they compete in the same local market.

  4. 04Inside /competitive-updateRe-check every source

38 claims re-fetched on 22 Sep; 13 downgraded to inferred, visibly, and 5 corrected.

  5. 05Re-check ยท 3 OctCheck every claim again

145 facts checked against quotes, the register and SEC filings; Camplify added.

  6. 06/generate-analysis /build-dashboardAnalyse and render

The New Zealand entry analysis rewritten, then this page rebuilt.

Why this compounds

A second pass costs a fraction of the first and shows only what moved

/competitive-update

Profiles build on what's already there.

A new pass edits the existing profiles and reports only what changed; on 3 October that meant one overturned finding and a new competitor, Camplify.

MaterialMinorNo change

Go broader

Depth gets added one competitor at a time.

GO Rentals, Camplify or Ezi Car Rental can get the same full-depth, citation-checked treatment Mevo, Cityhop and Zilch got, without re-running the survey on the rest.

Always regenerated

The analysis can't quietly go stale.

The analysis and this page are rebuilt from whatever the profiles say now, so nothing drifts out of sync while the research moves underneath it.

git log

Every update leaves a record.

Once published, each research pass becomes its own commit, and after a few cycles the history reads as a timeline of what changed in this market and when.

The labelling discipline

Every claim carries one of two labels, and the page draws them differently

- Observed: Cityhop trades under KINTO New Zealand Limited, 100% owned by Toyota Finance New Zealand Limited, trading as Toyota Financial Services. (https://app.companiesoffice.govt.nz/companies/app/ui/ pages/companies/35427/shareholdings) - Inferred (assumption): employee count for Cityhop's operating company could not be confirmed; aggregator estimates range from 1-10 to 12 and disagree.
Bars
Matrix cells
Toyota FinancialNone found
Inline textToyota Financial Services-owned since 2018, employee count unconfirmed

Sourced claims are re-checked against the pages they cite, never "verified true". A vendor's marketing figure that its own page supports is still a vendor claim, and stays marked as one. Unlabelled claims are treated as inferred.

What this method can't tell you

This is desk research from public sources, produced on 22 Sep 2026 and re-checked on 3 Oct 2026. There are no win/loss interviews, customer calls or analyst briefings behind it. New Zealand's transport regulator blocks automated access, so the licensing position comes from the Land Transport Act and an archived capture of the NZTA page. Published announcements are a lagging, partial view of what any company has running with customers, so nothing here is an audit of a competitor's internal capability. Fleet and membership figures are the most recent any public source disclosed, which is not necessarily current.

What counts as material, the trust boundary, and running this on another company

What counts as material

A finding that contradicts an existing Observed claim is material. One that contradicts an Inferred claim is minor, since it was already flagged as uncertain. New information is classed by how much it changes the competitive picture, and when in doubt the process over-flags.

Trust boundary

Everything retrieved by web search or page fetch is treated as untrusted data: facts are extracted from it, and instructions inside it are never followed. No such attempt turned up while building this repo. The homepage captures were taken in a fresh browser profile with nothing signed in.
